🎄 Let the tree be wonky!

Painting is just about making marks

Hey Reader

Let me let you in on a little secret…
Painting is simply about mark-making.
It truly is...One brushstroke at a time. One moment of showing up.

And yet… if you're like me - we manage to pile so much pressure on it.

Especially at this time of year - when everything feels busy, loud, and a bit too much - the idea of sitting down to paint can feel undeserved.

That’s why this week, I’ve been teaching how to paint the simplest little Christmas tree in watercolour.

No finnicky details.
No perfect branches. In fact mine's a bit wobbly.
Just making marks with a big brush - oh and adding a bit of bling too!

A few loose strokes. A bit of green. Some water doing what water does best.

And here’s the magic part - once you stop trying to paint a tree, and simply allow yourself to make marks that suggest a tree… everything softens.

Your shoulders drop.
Your breath slows.
Your mind stops racing ahead.

Because you’re not thinking about the outcome anymore - you’re having a bit of well-deserved time out - a bit of 'play time'. And you know what - that's allowed.

It's one of the reasons I fell in love with watercolours in the first place, because they quietly teach you how to let go. And boy did I need to let go of control!

So if painting has been feeling heavy or intimidating lately, I invite you to strip it right back.

Let the tree be wonky. Let the branches lean. Let the paint do what it wants to do!

Because painting doesn’t ask you to be perfect.
It asks you to be present.

And sometimes, especially in the middle of a busy season, that’s very much needed...

Until next time...Merry Christmas

Nature's messy right? Hey ReaderI live in the UK. It’s wet - Most of the time! But wow - the past 6-7 weeks have just been dark, damp and damn right depressing. There I said it and if you’re here in the UK with me too. You’ll know what it feels like when it actually stops raining.I feel like the daffodil at the bottom of my garden “Can we come out yet? Has it actually stopped!”So…This week it stopped. For a little bit and I actually got to go for a walk - in nature. Cup filled right there....

you dont need fancy watercolour supplies

Start with what you've got... Hey ReaderI just had to tackle this topic this week. I watched a Youtube video yesterday, from a pretty established watercolour artist and honestly their work is just beautiful. But...she was talking about supplies - paper, brushes, paints. The video kind of went like this...Buy the best if you wanna get better. Spend all of your spare cash on paper and that's the only way you'll make something from your art - I call a big bold BS to that - I really do.And here’s...

Two fingers up to Valentine's Day

Two fingers up to Valentine's Day.... Hey ReaderHave you ever sat down to paint… and instead of it feeling freeing, it feels completely forced? Well, that's what the prospect of Valentine's Day has done to me this week. You see...I share a studio space in Cardiff with a whole bunch of beautiful, creative people - all doing their own thing to find a slice of joy - and to share it. And this week I felt the need, guilt, pressure to paint for Valentines Day!But...Every single time I sat down and...
