Lost your painting mo-jo? This might help.

A messy mind stole my mo-jo....

Hey Reader

So… Can I be absolutely honest with you?

And I’m telling you this because if it’s happening to me then it’s probably happened to you before too..

I totally lost my mo-jo for painting…
I got a bit lost and overwhelmed again.

The exact reason why I fell in love with watercolours was because they rescued me from anxiety and stress - stress of a busy design career, plus family, home, and all of the big melting pot we call ‘LIFE’…

And this week I forgot my WHY!

I know it deep down in my soul…It’s to help you discover the amazing beauty and healing abilities of watercolours too!

I just forgot it for a moment.

Somewhere along the way, painting picked up this strange expectation that it should look perfect. That progress should be clean, simple and linear.

That results should arrive fast. Blah blah - back to that inner voice of self-pressure.

But now…I know how to quieten that voice. JUST PAINT…. simples!

What actually builds your own unique style is practice and focus. Actually painting and not thinking about everything else in your head! Even for only a few minutes a day… Think small bite-sized practice.

That’s what helps you to get to know..

  • How much water your brush holds
  • How pigment behaves on different papers
  • When to leave something alone and walk away…

That learning doesn’t feel dramatic while it’s happening. Compound interest friends. It’s not just relevant in the financial world. 🤷‍♀️

And here’s the important part: You don’t need to paint well for any of that to happen. You just need to focus on painting often.

In fact, some of the most useful learning happens in the paintings you don’t like very much. They show you where you rushed. Where you hesitated. Where you tried to control something that needed space. So if you’ve been waiting until you feel more confident or READY!

You’re ready NOW! Paint now.
Paint small. Paint imperfectly.
That’s how both style and attention are built.

Til next time… allow yourself to paint without pressure.

Til next time,
Sue 🎨💛

Nature's messy right? Hey ReaderI live in the UK. It’s wet - Most of the time! But wow - the past 6-7 weeks have just been dark, damp and damn right depressing. There I said it and if you’re here in the UK with me too. You’ll know what it feels like when it actually stops raining.I feel like the daffodil at the bottom of my garden “Can we come out yet? Has it actually stopped!”So…This week it stopped. For a little bit and I actually got to go for a walk - in nature. Cup filled right there....

you dont need fancy watercolour supplies

Start with what you've got... Hey ReaderI just had to tackle this topic this week. I watched a Youtube video yesterday, from a pretty established watercolour artist and honestly their work is just beautiful. But...she was talking about supplies - paper, brushes, paints. The video kind of went like this...Buy the best if you wanna get better. Spend all of your spare cash on paper and that's the only way you'll make something from your art - I call a big bold BS to that - I really do.And here’s...

Two fingers up to Valentine's Day

Two fingers up to Valentine's Day.... Hey ReaderHave you ever sat down to paint… and instead of it feeling freeing, it feels completely forced? Well, that's what the prospect of Valentine's Day has done to me this week. You see...I share a studio space in Cardiff with a whole bunch of beautiful, creative people - all doing their own thing to find a slice of joy - and to share it. And this week I felt the need, guilt, pressure to paint for Valentines Day!But...Every single time I sat down and...
