The power of purple...

I think I’m going through a purple phase. 💜
​
For the last few weeks, I seem to be reaching for purple every time I sit down to paint. There’s something about purple in watercolour that just feels a little bit magical.
​
It’s moody, it’s soft, it’s dramatic and, depending on how much water you throw at it, it can be about 17 different colours. 😂
​
But here’s what I’ve really been loving…
​Purple + Sap Green + Orange.
​They just work.
​
Purple and orange are opposites on the colour wheel, so when you put them together, they give each other a little kick. The orange feels warmer and brighter, while the purple suddenly looks deeper and richer.
​
Then throw Sap Green into the mix and you’ve got that gorgeous natural, slightly wild combination that you see everywhere in nature.
​
Think purple flowers.
Green leaves.
A flash of warm orange.
​
It’s a combination that feels alive without everything screaming for attention.
​
​It’s exactly why I love playing around with colour rather than always trying to get it “right”.​
​
Sometimes you stumble across a combination that makes you stop and think…Oooh. I like that.
​
So, here’s your little painting experiment for this week:​
​
Grab your purple, Sap Green and orange and have a play.

Just make some marks.
​
Let the colours bump into each other.
Add water.
See what happens.
