The paintings nobody ever sees

The one's that end up as scrap...

Hey Reader

Can I let you into a little secret….
There’s a messy pile of rejects in my studio - probably double those shown in the photo above.

Because..Not every painting I create makes the cut.
In fact... loads up in the recycling pile.

Yep... we all have a stack of “that didn’t work out” paintings too and that’s fine...

Because those flowers that actually turn out looking like potatoes - those paintings have an important job too.

They're the ones that teach us what too much water looks like.

The ones that show us when we’ve overworked a flower... and when we’ve slipped back into conscious thinking, instead of working in flow.

The thing is…
We only ever tend to see the finished paintings. Same as any and every other subject on social media - the shiny ones make the cut!

But behind every painting that makes it to the gallery... There are dozens of others that are scrap.
And if the scrap ones weren’t painted then there’d be no gallery at all… because that’s your practice…the 10,00 hours.

That’s where creativity lives - it’s a process not a result.

So here's your creativity challenge this week...Instead of aiming to paint one beautiful painting...

Aim to paint five.
Maybe one will make the gallery..
Maybe three will be average.
Maybe one will end up in the recycling.

And do you know what? That's a brilliant week of painting.
Because every single one counts.

Bye for now...
Go paint.

P.S. I've been quietly working away on something that celebrates your progress and creativity being a process... A gentle monthly watercolour space where there are no perfect paintings... just people enjoying the process together. If this sounds like your kind of space - have a look here 👀

Autumn watercolour flowers

The best thing you can do for your painting is to let it rest... Hey ReaderHere’s something I’ve learned about watercolour…Sometimes the best thing you can do for your painting is leave it alone.Put the brush down and walk away…Stop fiddling Go and make a cup of tea.Do literally anything other than add just one more bit.Because there comes a point where you’re no longer improving the painting. You’re just… interfering.Honestly...I’ve done this SO many times.“Hmmmm. It needs a little more...

purple watercolour flowers

The power of purple... Hey ReaderI think I’m going through a purple phase. 💜For the last few weeks, I seem to be reaching for purple every time I sit down to paint. There’s something about purple in watercolour that just feels a little bit magical. It’s moody, it’s soft, it’s dramatic and, depending on how much water you throw at it, it can be about 17 different colours. 😂But here’s what I’ve really been loving…Purple + Sap Green + Orange. They just work.Purple and orange are opposites on the...
